An attractive market town which can trace its history back some 800 years, Coleford is the hub for a number of routes radiating out into the Forest of Dean and surrounding areas. Its Market Charter was granted in 1661 and 50 years later it was a thriving community of 160 houses. Served by a horse tramroad from 1812, from 1883 the town boasted two railway stations. This booklet looks back at the Coleford of yesterday, with a historical text, detailed captions and pictures going right back to the 1860s.
