The Glance Back Series of Forest of
Dean titles
The first volume in this series, A glance back at Lydney, was written and
published by Neil Parkhouse under the Black Dwarf banner in 1998. It presents a
concise but well illustrated history of the town, told mainly through extended
captions to the pictures. These were compiled with the benefit of information
provided by many older residents, which add much local colour and otherwise
forgotten detail to the many photographs, dating from c1865 to c1950. Published
in A5 format, on glossy art paper but with an easy-on-the-pocket cover price, it
was an instant bestseller and has since been reprinted. In the meantime, the
range was expanded to include many other Forest towns and villages, and also
Lydney Docks.
Now up to number 8, further additions to the series are planned, including, when
time permits, a volume covering Cinderford. The slightly higher price of two of
the volumes reflects an increased number of pages in these.
